Unlike many photgraphers who picked up a camera as mere infants, I came to photgraphy relatively late in life. I was eyeballing thirty when I first tried to take a decent photograph, and it was a few years later before I actually tried to make a decent photograph.
Soon after I began studying photography I understood that I needed to make portraits. People intrigue me. Our uniqueness, our quirks and idiosyncracies and foibles. There's a debate in photography about whether a single photograph can tell us anything meaningful about a person. I've always believed that if you want to know about a person's disposition, there's a lot that can be read in the face. I have a theory that the muscles we use most on our face become the prominent ones, and over time, the face grows to reflect the person within.
To me portrait photography is about empathy, the ability to tune in to another person's inner thoughts and feelings. Whatever skill I may have as a portrait photographer is probably owing to my desire to get on well with the people I meet, to understand their energy and try to relect that energy. When I get a feeling for a subject's personality it becomes much easier to portray that person authentically. I hope that my images resonate with my subjects, it would disappoint me to think they did not. Although if I didn't like the person I might feel differently...
